HISTORY OF SOCCER BALL AIRSHIP

The World’s Largest Soccer Ball airship has an illustrious history.

In 2002, the designer of this airship was invited to Washington, DC to participate in the High-Altitude Airship (HAA) Industry Day Briefing at the Department of Defence. The requirements for HAA was that an airship must be able to remain at 60 - 70,000-ft. (18,300 - 21,336 m) for weeks or months (similar to the recent Chinese spy balloons).

As a result of this meeting, company in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada built a "small" prototype airship, which was used to demonstrate the spherical-shaped airships' high-altitude suitability versus the traditional elongated airships/blimps.

The outer envelope was manufactured from a custom-made Spectra fabric. Spectra fibres are 15-times stronger than steel of the same weight. Initially it was designed as all-white.
June 12, 2003, this airship was used by its designer to set the Absolute World Record in altitude for helium filled airships/blimps - 20,452-ft. (6,234-m). Verified by FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale).

In 2005, soccer ball markings were applied to the airship in Arizona, USA.

The Soccer Ball airship was flown around Newmarket, Ontario until 2006 when it was retired. Since its retirement, the engines and flight deck have been removed and the envelope has been stored in a warehouse. It was recently taken out and inspected. It still looks as good as new thanks to the Spectra fabric that it was made from.
