Staying Safe Online with DealStream
At DealStream, your safety is our priority. We have developed a multi-layered approach to protect our members from cybercriminals and fraudsters. However, no system is foolproof and we all know scammers are out there. If you do get scammed, please note we are not involved in your transaction and we are unable to refund your money or take legal action on your behalf, so let’s work together to prevent scams from happening. Listed below are the measures we take to help protect you, and the steps you can take to stay safe.
How We Help Protect You
We have several systems in place to help detect and prevent scams:
- Red Flag Detection Software
Our proprietary software evaluates 20+ variables to identify suspicious behavior and assigns red flags where appropriate. - Dedicated Safety Team
Flagged accounts are reviewed by our safety team. If necessary, we suspend members who violate our policies or present a potential safety risk. - Abuse Reporting Tools
You can report suspicious activity or fake listings using the "Report Abuse" button found above every listing description, on each member profile and on inquiry details.
Steps You Can Take to Stay Safe
Here are some key steps you can take to ensure your own safety:
1. Check People Out
Before doing business with anyone, do your homework:
- Identity Verification: Look for the green checkmark next to a member’s name. Verified members have undergone identity verification, which makes it harder for scammers to hide behind fake profiles. DealStream's identity verification process is powered by Stripe, a trusted technology provider used globally by companies like Amazon, Google, and Zoom. Stripe employs industry best practices for identity verification; however, it's important to understand that this process is not equivalent to a comprehensive background check.
- Member Since Date: Check how long the person has been a member of DealStream. A longer membership period indicates trustworthiness, as scammers often join and quickly abandon their accounts or get suspended.
- Paid Plan: If a member is on a paid plan (Pro), they have a valid credit card (or other payment method) and are less likely to be a scammer.
- Google Their Name: Search the person’s name along with terms like “scam,” “fraud,” “criminal,” or “lawsuit” to see if they have any red flags in their past. Ensure the details match the person you’re dealing with on DealStream.
- Reverse Image Search: If the person has a profile photo, run a reverse image search to check if it’s a stock photo or stolen image. Scammers often use fake or stolen photos to appear legitimate.
- LinkedIn: Search for the individual on LinkedIn to ensure their professional background matches the information provided on DealStream.
- Visit Their Website: If the person has a website, check for signs of fraud. Look for websites that are new, hastily put together or have suspiciously poor content. Conduct a WHOIS lookup to verify the website's owner.
- Reverse Email & Phone Lookup: Do a reverse lookup of their email address and phone number. It may be a red flag if they are not listed as the owner of the email or phone number.
2. Watch For Red Flags
Be cautious if someone:
- Refuses to meet or talk via phone/video.
- Sends unsolicited money or checks.
- Offers deals that seem too good to be true.
- Demands upfront payments or won’t use escrow.
- Is located in high-risk countries (e.g., Nigeria, Romania).
- Asks you to receive payments on their behalf.
- Has name changes or title changes in their email signature lines
- Creates a false sense of urgency. Purchasing a business takes time and requires thorough due diligence.
3. Use Best Practices
- Meet in person before signing contracts or sending money.
- Don’t accept cashier’s checks or give out financial information.
- Always use a trusted escrow service (e.g., escrow.com).
- Have a lawyer review contracts and conduct due diligence.
- Use professionals — don’t cut corners.
