Bank Instruments And Monetization
Anyone who works with SBLCs, BGs, LCs, DLCs, or other bank instruments has probably felt the shift this year. Not long ago, a leased instrument could be monetized for 65–70% of its face value. It wasn’t ideal, but it gave buyers, sellers, and project sponsors something they needed: a safety net and a way to keep deals moving.
Take a common commodity scenario. A buyer wants sugar out of Brazil but doesn’t have the full cash upfront. A leased SBLC gave the seller confidence that if the buyer fell short, the instrument could be monetized to recover funds. It kept transactions alive that otherwise would have died on the table.
Or look at real estate and construction. Developers who didn’t have all the capital on hand could lease a BG or SBLC, walk it into a bank, and secure a credit line or get it monetized to launch their project. It wasn’t magic money — but it filled a gap that traditional lending wasn’t filling fast enough.
That was the landscape.
Now the numbers tell a different story.
Across the market, rates have tightened. Monetizers who offered 70% not long ago are now around 50%. And many of us are hearing early signals that next year could fall even further — possibly into the 25–35% range.
The ripple effects are real:
Deals structured around last year’s LTV assumptions suddenly don’t work.
Buyers who relied on high monetization to cover commodity purchases now face wider funding gaps.
Developers need stronger balance sheets or alternative structures to move forward.
Intermediaries are seeing more scrutiny and longer underwriting times.
The good news is that the tools themselves aren’t going away. But the market is forcing everyone to rethink how they use them. Anyone planning deals around bank instruments in 2025 needs to adjust expectations early, tighten their documentation, and build in more conservative assumptions.
The environment is changing — and the deals that succeed will be the ones structured with this new reality in mind.
