Auto Parts and Accessories Industry Terminology

ACES (Aftermarket Catalog Exchange Standard)

A catalog data standard (from the Auto Care Association) for communicating vehicle fitment/application data—year/make/model/engine—between manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.

We need to publish our applications in ACES 4.3 to onboard with that marketplace

Aftermarket

All parts, accessories, and supplies sold outside the vehicle manufacturer’s new-vehicle channel (includes performance, replacement, appearance, and service parts).

We compete in the 4x4 accessories aftermarket

Backorder

An unfilled customer order due to a stockout; the order remains open until inventory arrives.

That water pump is on backorder for two weeks

Bill of Materials (BOM)

A structured list of components, subassemblies, and materials needed to build a finished part or kit.

The tow-hitch BOM includes hardware and the wiring harness

CAN Bus

A vehicle network protocol (Controller Area Network) enabling ECUs/modules to communicate.

The OBD-II port taps into the CAN bus for diagnostics

Core Charge

A refundable deposit added to certain parts (e.g., alternators, calipers, batteries) to encourage return of the used 'core' for remanufacture.

There's a $50 core charge on that starter

Cross-Reference (Interchange)

The mapping of equivalent or compatible part numbers across brands.

Interchange this OE number to our private-label SKU

Distribution Center (DC)

A warehouse that stores, picks, packs, and ships parts to stores, installers, or consumers.

The Midwest DC achieves 96% same-day fill

Duty/HTS Code

Harmonized Tariff Schedule classification used to determine import duties and compliance requirements.

Assign the correct HTS code for brake pads to avoid delays

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

Standardized, system-to-system exchange of business documents (e.g., 850 POs, 856 ASNs, 810 invoices).

The retailer requires EDI 856 advance ship notices

ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)

Integrated software managing finance, inventory, purchasing, production, and order fulfillment.

We run MRP inside the ERP weekly

FIFO (First-In, First-Out)

Inventory rotation/costing method where the oldest stock is sold or used first.

Use FIFO to prevent pad compounds from aging out

Fitment

The vehicle-specific compatibility of a part (year/make/model/engine/trim).

Confirm fitment before shipping the lift kit

GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Inventory Investment)

A profitability metric: gross margin dollars earned per dollar of average inventory.

Brake pads deliver higher GMROI than rotors

GTIN/UPC/EAN

Global product identifiers used for barcoding and digital catalogs.

Add GTINs to all SKUs for marketplace compliance

Hazmat Shipping

Regulated handling/labels for hazardous materials (e.g., airbags, batteries, aerosols).

That airbag inflator is hazmat—use proper UN numbers

Hub-Centric Fitment

Wheel fitment where the wheel's center bore matches the vehicle hub for precise centering (vs. lug-centric).

Use hub-centric rings to adapt aftermarket wheels

IATF 16949

Automotive quality management standard integrating ISO 9001 with sector-specific requirements.

Our plant is IATF 16949 certified

Inventory Turnover

How many times inventory is sold and replaced over a period; sales/average inventory.

Raise turnover by reducing slow-moving SKUs

JIT (Just-in-Time)

Lean replenishment strategy delivering parts close to when they are needed to reduce inventory.

We JIT-deliver to the assembly cell hourly

Jobber

A traditional aftermarket parts store/wholesaler serving local installers/DIYers.

The jobber called for a cross-reference

Kanban

A visual pull system signaling when to replenish parts or materials.

Wheel lug kits use a two-bin Kanban

Kitting

Bundling multiple SKUs into one sellable unit to simplify installation or retail.

The timing belt kit includes idlers and seals

Lead Time

Elapsed time from order to receipt (supplier, production, transit, or total).

Chinese New Year extends ocean lead times

Lift Kit

Suspension components that raise ride height for off-road capability or aesthetics.

This 3-inch lift kit needs longer brake lines

MAP (Minimum Advertised Price)

A policy that sets the lowest price a reseller may advertise (not necessarily sell) a product.

Violating MAP risks de-authorization

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

The smallest quantity a supplier will accept on a single order.

The MOQ for rotors is 200 units per SKU

New vs Remanufactured vs Rebuilt

New: brand-new part; Remanufactured: restored to like-new with new wear components and testing; Rebuilt: repaired to working condition (often to a lesser standard than reman).

Offer reman calipers with core returns

NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)

A measurement/feel of unwanted sound and vibration characteristics.

Poly bushings increase NVH

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics II)

Standardized diagnostics interface/codes for vehicles (post-1996 in the U.S.).

Read the P0420 code via OBD-II

OE (Original Equipment)

Parts installed on the vehicle at the factory or their exact equivalents.

We offer OE-spec ride height sensors

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

A company that manufactures parts for vehicle makers (often also sells into the aftermarket).

This filter is made by the OEM supplier

Part Number

A unique identifier assigned to a specific product/variant.

Include the OE number in our interchange list

PIES (Product Information Exchange Standard)

A standard (Auto Care Association) for product content—attributes, digital assets, pricing, packaging—shared across the supply chain.

Send the retailer a PIES 7.2 file

Planogram

A visual plan for shelf placement, facings, and merchandising in stores.

The planogram puts wiper blades at eye level

QMS (Quality Management System)

The organizational framework, processes, and documentation to ensure consistent quality (often aligned to ISO/IATF).

Audit found a gap in our QMS for traceability

Recall

A formal action to remedy a safety or compliance defect in fielded products.

We issued a voluntary recall on fuel lines

Reverse Logistics

The processes for moving goods from customers back to the seller—returns, core returns, repairs, recycling.

Core returns flow via reverse logistics

RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization)

Approval and tracking number issued before a customer returns a product.

Open an RMA for that defective TPMS sensor

SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association)

Trade association for performance, off-road, and appearance accessories; also the industry’s largest annual show.

We're launching the new intake at SEMA

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

A unique inventory item with its own identifier; often the level at which stock and pricing are managed.

We added 50 new SKUs this season

Supersession

When a part number is replaced by a newer number, often due to design change, consolidation, or vendor change.

Map old numbers to the supersession in the catalog

Telematics

Transmission of vehicle data (location, diagnostics, usage) over networks for services and insights.

Telematics shows battery voltage trends

Torque Spec

The manufacturer-recommended tightening torque for fasteners; critical to safety and performance.

Follow torque specs on wheel lugs
