- Our ARPLH jumped to $36 after we tightened peak pricing. - League discounts lowered ARPLH on weeknights.

Average (League Average)

A bowler’s mean score over a defined number of games, used for handicapping and divisions.

- My average went from 172 to 178 this season. - You need a verified average to enter the scratch division.

Ball Return

The mechanical system that transports the bowling ball back from the pin deck to the bowler.

- Lane 14’s ball return is jammed with a house ball. - The new capping prevents kids from sitting on the ball return.

Brackets

Optional single-elimination side competitions run alongside leagues/tournaments; bowlers pay entry to compete for payouts.

- I’m in three brackets tonight to juice the action. - Brackets boosted tournament revenue by $1,200.

Breakpoint

The point downlane where the ball transitions most sharply from skid to hook toward the pocket.

- On this 41-foot pattern, aim for a breakpoint around the 7 board. - His ball missed the breakpoint and went Brooklyn.

Brooklyn

- The new resin ball improved his corner-pin carry. - We saw better carry after redistributing outside oil.

COGS (Cost of Goods Sold)

Direct costs of items sold, typically for F&B and pro shop goods; used to manage margins.

- Tighten pour costs to reduce F&B COGS to 25%. - Pro shop COGS spiked after freight increases.

Software and practices for collecting contacts, tracking visits, and running campaigns and loyalty programs.

- Our CRM segmented league bowlers for a ball-upgrade promo. - Integrate online bookings into the CRM journey.

Differential (RG Differential)

The difference between a ball’s maximum and minimum radius of gyration; higher differential increases flare and hook potential.

- Choose higher differential for more backend motion. - His low-diff ball struggled to create entry angle on long oil.

Dry Lanes

Lane conditions with little oil, causing earlier hook and stronger friction.

- It’s playing dry outside five; move inside and slow down. - Dry lanes mean urethane might control the pocket better.

Dynamic Pricing

Adjusting lane and party prices by demand, daypart, and lead time to maximize yield.

- Dynamic pricing lifted Friday ARPLH 18%. - Off-peak dynamic discounts boosted early-afternoon traffic.

EBITDA

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization; a proxy for operating profitability.

- Our EBITDA margin target is 22%. - New wage laws compressed EBITDA last quarter.

F&B (Food and Beverage)

All culinary operations including bar service; a major ancillary revenue and profit driver.

- Increase F&B per cap with lane-side service. - Track F&B mix by daypart to tune menus.

FEC (Family Entertainment Center)

A multi-attraction venue combining bowling with arcade, laser tag, VR, ropes, or mini-golf.

- Shifting to an FEC model doubled weekend parties. - FEC competitors are winning on bundled experiences.

Free-Fall Pinsetter

Traditional pinsetter where pins are free-standing and reset by mechanical sweep/spotting, not connected by strings.

- Free-fall pinsetters need more parts and labor than string. - Some leagues prefer free-fall for carry and pin action.

Group Sales

Team and processes focused on pre-booked events (corporate, school, charity) with packages and minimums.

- Group sales closed a 120-guest corporate buyout. - Incentivize outbound calls to fill weekday daytime slots.

Handicap

Scoring adjustment to level competition, often a percentage of the difference from a base score.

- League handicap is 90% of 220. - With handicap, new bowlers can still win jackpots.

House Ball

Center-owned bowling ball available for casual guests; varies in weight and generic drilling.

- Offer more 8–10 lb house balls for kids. - The pro shop measured his fit and upgraded him from a house ball.

House Shot (THS)

Typical house oil pattern with higher oil volume in the middle and less outside to guide balls to the pocket.

- On THS, outside miss room is forgiving. - A 10:1 ratio THS produced high scores last season.

Kegel

A leading manufacturer of lane machines and creator of named oil patterns; shorthand for lane conditioning tech.

- The Kegel machine needs a new transfer brush. - We’re putting out the Kegel Stone Street pattern for practice.

Lane Machine

Automated device that cleans and oils lanes to a programmed pattern and volume.

- Run a full clean-and-oil before the 6 p.m. league. - Update the lane machine program to add buff distance.

Lane Pattern

The length, volume, and shape of lane oil across boards; determines ball motion and difficulty.

- Today’s pattern is 41 feet with a 10:1 ratio. - Sport patterns punish misses right of target.

Lane Utilization

Percentage of available lane-hours that are sold; a capacity and efficiency metric.

- Saturday lane utilization hit 92%. - Improve utilization by staggering league start times.

NPS (Net Promoter Score)

Customer loyalty metric based on likelihood to recommend; calculated from survey responses.

- Post-event surveys lifted our NPS by 14 points. - NPS dipped after a spike in lane waits.

Open Frame

A frame in which a bowler does not knock down all ten pins (no strike or spare).

- Two open frames early put us behind. - Minimize open frames by shooting spares with plastic.

PAP (Positive Axis Point)

The point on a bowling ball that defines a bowler’s axis of rotation; critical for ball layout.

- The pro shop measured his PAP at 4½ over, ½ up. - Layouts were adjusted off her PAP for smoother motion.

PBA (Professional Bowlers Association)

The principal men’s professional tour and sanctioning body in the U.S.; sets many competitive standards.

- We’re hosting a PBA regional this spring. - Pro shop carries PBA-registered equipment lines.

Pinsetter

The machine that clears fallen pins and spots a fresh rack; includes free-fall and string systems.

- Lane 6 pinsetter is throwing a 180 error. - We’re upgrading half the house to new pinsetters.

Pocket

- The pro shop recommended a lower-RG ball for him. - Ball drilling sales spike during fall league signups.

Reactive Resin

Modern coverstock material with porosity/chemistry that increases traction and hook on oiled lanes.

- Reactive resin helped her read the midlane. - Switch to urethane when reactive is too jumpy.

Rev Rate

The rotational speed of the ball at release, typically measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).

- His rev rate is around 425 RPM—high for league. - Lower rev rate players benefit from stronger covers.

RG (Radius of Gyration)

A measure of how mass is distributed in a ball; lower RG revs up sooner, higher RG saves energy for downlane.

- Choose low RG for earlier roll on heavier oil. - The ball’s RG of 2.48 makes it read the midlane.

ROI (Return on Investment)

Profitability measure comparing gains to the cost of an investment (e.g., lanes, scoring, attractions).

- VIP lane buildout paid back with a 28% ROI. - Measure ROI on new arcade installs after 12 months.

Scratch

Competition or scoring without handicap; also refers to a bowler’s raw score.

- Spare shooting wins leagues—practice your corner pins. - She spared the 3–6–10 to stay clean.

Split

A spare leave where the headpin is down and two or more non-adjacent pin groups remain (e.g., 7–10, 4–10).

- That 4–9 split was a bad break. - He avoided splits by moving in as the lanes dried.
