Car Washes Industry Terminology
Acid Presoak
A low-pH detergent applied before alkaline chemistry to dissolve inorganic soils and improve overall cleaning, particularly in touchless or two-step processes.
Run the acid presoak first to cut the road film before the alkaline hits; Dial back the acid tip—trim is starting to etch; Our two-step with acid presoak reduced rewash rates by 20%.
Alkaline Presoak
A high-pH cleaner that emulsifies oils, grease, and organic soils; complements acid presoak in two-step washing and is a core cleaning phase in most tunnels.
Increase dwell on the alkaline presoak during pollen season; Our alkaline is too hot—customers are complaining about streaking; Switch to a buffered alkaline for better trim safety.
ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition)
Vision system that reads license plates to identify vehicles for membership validation, POS activation, and fraud reduction at the paystation or gate.
ALPR cut our entry time by 6 seconds per car; Plate misreads increase in rain—tune the camera exposure; We tied ALPR to our POS for account-level promotions.
Ancillary Revenue
Non-wash revenue streams that complement core wash sales, including vending, detailing, fleet services, and other add-ons.
Ancillary mix moved from 7% to 10% after adding mat washers; Bundle towel vending with top-package coupons; Detailing adds high-margin ancillary dollars on sunny weekends.
APC (Average Per Car)
Average revenue earned per vehicle, calculated as total wash revenue divided by car count; a primary pricing and mix KPI.
APC rose to $14.20 after we added ceramic; Menu redesign lifted APC by $0.85; Rainy weeks compress APC as more base-package customers show up.
Backflow Preventer
A valve assembly that prevents contaminated water from flowing back into the potable water system; required on chemical and reclaim connections.
Annual backflow certification is due; Install a reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) on the chemical feed; Backflow failure shut us down for inspection.
Capex (Capital Expenditures)
Funds used to acquire or upgrade long-term assets such as equipment, land, and buildings; key to expansion and modernization.
The second tunnel is a $3.5M capex; Capex plan includes RO upgrade and vac canopy; We target sub-4 year capex paybacks on remodels.
Capture Rate
The share of addressable traffic or trade-area drivers that a site converts into paying customers; influenced by access, visibility, and marketing.
With 40k ADT and 1,200 daily washes, our capture rate is 3%; Better ingress/egress improved capture; Billboard tests raised capture rate during commute hours.
Ceramic Coating (Car Wash Protectant)
A premium, silica-based protectant that enhances gloss, hydrophobicity, and durability; used as a high-margin upsell in menus.
Ceramic attach rate hit 28%; Add a ceramic arch and light show to lift perceived value; We trained staff to explain ceramic beading benefits.
Chain Speed
The speed of the conveyor that determines dwell time, spacing, and throughput (cars per hour) in a tunnel wash.
Bump chain speed to 70 fpm for peak rush; Higher speed cut dwell time—adjust chemistry; We coordinate chain speed with CPH targets.
Chemical Titration
Analytical process to measure chemical concentration and validate proper dilution, ensuring cleaning performance and cost control.
Titrate presoak weekly to avoid overuse; Titration showed foam brush at 2x target strength; We produce a titration log for chemical audits.
Conveyor Tunnel
A moving-belt or chain-driven wash system that pulls vehicles through a series of cleaning, rinsing, and drying stations.
110-foot tunnel, dual belt, 1,200 CPH peak; Tunnel layout optimizes wheel cleaning upstream; Add a mini-tunnel for overflow on Saturdays.
CUP (Conditional Use Permit)
A zoning authorization that allows a car wash to operate on a site subject to conditions related to traffic, noise, water, and aesthetics.
City requires a CUP for exterior car washes; Public hearing set for our CUP; We adjusted site plan to satisfy CUP conditions on noise.
Deionized Spot-Free Rinse (DI)
Water treated by ion exchange to remove dissolved minerals, used in the final rinse to minimize spotting and improve finish quality.
Resin exhausted—DI at 25 ppm causing spots; Switch to mixed-bed resin for better DI; We reserve DI for final rinse to control costs.
Demand Charges (Electric Utility)
Utility fees based on the highest short-interval kilowatt demand in a billing cycle; can exceed energy charges if loads are unmanaged.
Stagger dryer startups to lower demand charges; Add VFDs to reduce peak loads; We track 15-minute peak demand on the dashboard.

Net-30 fleet billing with LPR authorization; Volume pricing at 20% discount; Add weekend access for rental car fleet.
Friction vs Touchless
Two wash approaches: friction uses brushes or cloth for mechanical action; touchless relies on high pressure and chemistry without contact.
Friction cleans wheels better in winter; Touchless needs hotter chemistry and longer dwell; We market touchless as paint-safe for sensitive customers.
GPM (Gallons Per Minute)
A measure of water flow used to size pumps, nozzles, and chemical injectors, affecting cleaning performance and utility costs.
Nozzle set to 2.5 GPM at 900 PSI; Lower GPM to raise dwell on presoak; Audit GPM to reduce water costs.
Good-Better-Best Pricing
Menu strategy offering ascending features and price points to maximize perceived value and increase average ticket.
Add value cues to the Best package; GBB moved our mix to 35% top-tier; Anchor pricing at $25 to lift the middle tier.
Grit Pit (Sand Trap)
An underground settling basin that captures sand and solids from wash water to protect pumps, separators, and reclaim systems.
Pump out the grit pit every quarter; Sand carryover is clogging the reclaim; Install a larger grit trap for construction season.
Hardness (gpg)
Concentration of calcium and magnesium in water, measured in grains per gallon; high hardness reduces detergent performance and causes scale.
At 18 gpg, we need a softener; Hardness creep caused spotting; Regenerate resin when hardness rises above 3 gpg post-softener.
Hydrominder/Proportioner
A mechanical or venturi-based device that mixes chemicals with water at fixed ratios to ensure consistent application and cost control.
Swap the gray tip to lean out the foam; Proportioner check valves are leaking air; Log dilution ratios after chemical changes.
IBA (In-Bay Automatic)
A machine that moves around a stationary vehicle, performing wash cycles; typically lower capacity than conveyor tunnels but needs less land and labor.
IBA averages 12–20 CPH; Add dryers to the IBA for higher ticket; IBAs need higher dwell for touchless cycles.
Ingress/Egress
The ease and design of entering and exiting a site; critical to safety, capture rate, and peak throughput.
Left-turn egress is killing capture; Add a decel lane to improve ingress; Stacking spills into the street—restripe the lot.
IRR (Internal Rate of Return)
The discount rate that makes a project’s net present value zero; used to evaluate site development and major upgrades.
Target IRR above 20% for greenfields; Remodel IRR clears hurdle with new dryers; Sensitivity shows IRR drops 300 bps if APC falls $1.
KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
Quantifiable measures used to track operational and financial performance, guiding decisions and accountability.
Weekly KPI huddle every Monday; Set targets for APC and membership mix; KPI dashboard flags chemical cost per car above budget.
LHPC (Labor Hours Per Car)
