Furniture Stores Industry Terminology
A/B Testing
A controlled experiment comparing two versions of a webpage, ad, email, or offer to see which performs better on a defined metric (e.g., conversion, click-through, add-to-cart).
We A/B tested the product page for our sectional sofas to compare fabric swatch layouts | The B variant with free white-glove messaging lifted add-to-cart rate by 8% | Let's A/B test the homepage hero featuring dining sets vs bedroom bundles
ABC Analysis
An inventory classification method that ranks items as A (high value/velocity), B (moderate), or C (low) to focus attention and resources on the most impactful SKUs.
Our top-selling mattresses and sectionals are A items; accent tables are B; lamp finials are C | Use ABC analysis to prioritize cycle counts in the warehouse | We tightened reorder points on A SKUs and let C SKUs run lean
ADA Compliance
Adherence to Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility standards in-store (aisles, ramps, fixtures) and online (contrast, alt text, keyboard access), ensuring access for people with disabilities.
We reworked aisle spacing to meet ADA width requirements throughout the showroom | Our website passed ADA audits for keyboard navigation and alt text on product images | The checkout counter was lowered for ADA compliance
Add-On Sales
Selling complementary items alongside the primary purchase to increase basket size; often measured via attach rate or units per transaction.
Train associates to attach mattress protectors and pillows to every mattress sale | Bundle a rug pad with area rugs to lift add-on rates | Our attach rate on dining chairs per table climbed to 4.2
Augmented Reality (AR)
Technology that overlays 3D furniture models into a customer’s real environment via smartphone or tablet to visualize scale, fit, and finishes.
Customers preview sectionals in their living rooms with true-to-scale AR | We added AR to our dining category, reducing return rates | The app’s AR feature lets shoppers switch fabrics on the sofa in-room
Average Ticket Value (ATV)
Average revenue per transaction, calculated as total revenue divided by number of orders; a key productivity and merchandising metric.
Our ATV rose after we introduced bundle pricing on bedroom sets | The design appointment program increased average ticket by $420 | Promoting protection plans boosted ATV without hurting conversion
Backorder
An order accepted for an item not currently in stock that will be fulfilled once replenished; common for long-lead or custom furniture.
The oak dresser is on backorder with a 6-week ETA | We offered a 10% courtesy discount to keep the backordered sofa order | Customer agreed to split shipment due to the backordered nightstands
Bill of Lading (BOL)
A legal document between shipper and carrier detailing the goods, destination, and terms of transport; serves as receipt and evidence of delivery.
Confirm the BOL number before scheduling the home delivery | The signed BOL is required to file a freight claim for damaged casegoods | Our EDI system now auto-generates BOLs for outbound LTL
BOPIS (Buy Online, Pick Up In Store)
A hybrid fulfillment option allowing customers to purchase online and collect items at a store or warehouse, reducing last-mile costs and speeding pickup.
BOPIS orders for bar stools surged ahead of the holiday weekend | We tightened BOPIS pick-window to 48 hours to improve inventory accuracy | Offer BOPIS on in-stock mattresses to capture urgent demand
Brick-and-Click Retail
A business model combining physical showrooms with e-commerce, integrating inventory, pricing, promotions, and service across channels.
Our brick-and-click model shares one inventory pool across stores and e-commerce | The new showroom complements our online assortment with tactile experiences | We aligned online promotions with in-store tags for brick-and-click consistency
Casegoods
Non-upholstered furniture typically made of wood, metal, or glass, such as dressers, dining tables, cabinets, and bookcases; contrasted with upholstery.
We expanded casegoods into solid-wood dining buffets | Damage rates are higher on mirrored casegoods; reinforce packaging | The casegoods vendor offers custom finishes on dressers and nightstands
Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC)
A metric of how long cash is tied up in the business: days inventory outstanding plus days sales outstanding minus days payables outstanding.
Reducing lead times on imports cut our CCC by 12 days | Taking early-pay discounts extended payables and improved CCC | Faster turns on sofas lowered cash tied up in inventory
COGS (Cost of Goods Sold)
The direct costs of acquiring or producing goods sold, typically including product cost, inbound freight, and duties; excludes selling, general, and administrative expenses.
Include inbound ocean freight and duty in COGS to see true margins | Our COGS rose after foam price increases | Landed cost changes feed into COGS for accurate pricing
Cross-Docking
A logistics method where goods move from inbound to outbound transportation with minimal storage, speeding flow and reducing handling.
We cross-dock recliners from inbound LTL to our last-mile partner same day | Cross-docking cut storage costs and shortened delivery windows | ASNs enable efficient cross-docking of casegoods
Cushion Density
A measure of foam mass per cubic foot (lb/ft³) used in upholstered furniture; higher density generally indicates better support and durability.
Upgrade to 2.2 lb foam to reduce warranty claims on seat cushions | Product page lists cushion density and ILD for transparency | The sleeper sofa uses 1.8 lb density foam with a fiber wrap
Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)
The projected net profit or revenue attributable to a customer over their relationship; guides marketing spend, retention, and service investments.
Design service clients show 3x CLV vs average | Improving delivery experience increased CLV by reducing churn | Use CLV to set acceptable customer acquisition cost
Dead Stock
Inventory that hasn’t sold for an extended period and is unlikely to sell without markdowns, bundling, or liquidation.
Accent chests over 270 days on hand were flagged as dead stock | We ran a clearance event to liquidate dead stock rugs | Convert dead stock to floor model giveaways to drive traffic
Direct-to-Consumer (DTC)
A go-to-market model where brands sell directly to end consumers, often via e-commerce and owned showrooms, bypassing traditional wholesale channels.
Our DTC line launched online with a pop-up showroom | DTC margins fund free in-home delivery on sofas | The vendor is shifting from wholesale to a DTC strategy
Drop Ship
A fulfillment method where the supplier ships orders directly to the customer on the retailer’s behalf, often using retailer-branded documentation.
The vendor will drop ship the crib directly to the customer | We enabled branded packing slips for drop-ship orders | Drop ship expanded assortment without adding warehouse space
Durability Rating (Rub Count)
Textile abrasion resistance measured by tests like Wyzenbeek (double rubs) or Martindale cycles; higher counts indicate greater durability.
Specify 30,000+ double rubs (Wyzenbeek) on commercial-grade fabrics | Product cards display Martindale scores for upholstery | The linen blend tested low on rub count; not suited for family rooms
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)
Standardized, computer-to-computer exchange of business documents (e.g., purchase orders, advance ship notices, invoices) between trading partners.
We transmit POs and ASNs via EDI with major vendors | EDI 856 is required before the DC will receive | EDI reduced invoice disputes for casegoods
End Cap Display
A merchandising display at the end of an aisle or in a focal showroom position used to highlight promotions, new arrivals, or seasonal stories.
Feature seasonal dining chairs on the front end cap | The recliner end cap drove a 20% lift during TV season | Use end caps for clearance bar carts with bold signage
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
An integrated software suite that manages core business processes such as finance, purchasing, inventory, order management, and reporting.
ERP integrates POS, purchasing, and inventory across stores | We moved vendor invoices into the ERP for three-way match | The ERP feeds daily stock to our website and marketplaces
ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)
The predicted date and time a shipment or delivery will arrive; used for customer communications and scheduling operations.
The sofa has an ETA of October 12 to our DC | Text customers ETAs and delivery windows the day before | Vendor delays pushed the ETA two weeks
Floor Model
A display unit used on the sales floor for customer evaluation; often sold at a discount, sometimes with minor wear or as-is conditions.
Sell the floor model as-is after the style is discontinued | Mark the floor model with a tag showing small scratches | We rotate floor models quarterly to keep the showroom fresh
FOB (Free On Board)
An Incoterm that defines when ownership, risk, and freight costs transfer from seller to buyer (e.g., FOB Origin vs FOB Destination).
We buy FOB Factory; we own the goods once they cross the ship’s rail | Negotiate FOB Destination to reduce freight risk | Clarify FOB terms to allocate damage claims properly
Footfall
The count of visitors entering a store; used to calculate conversion rate, staffing levels, and marketing effectiveness.
Footfall rose 12% after the radio campaign | With stable footfall, improving conversion is our next lever | Sensor data showed weekend footfall peaks at 2 pm
Freight Class
A standardized categorization (by the NMFC) for LTL freight pricing based on density, handling, stowability, and liability.
Class 250 applies due to low-density upholstered chairs | Correct freight class reduced our LTL charges | The NMFC code changed the freight class on bar stools
Full Truckload (FTL)
A shipping mode where a single shipment fills an entire trailer; typically faster with fewer touches and lower damage risk than LTL.
We consolidated casegoods to ship FTL from the port | FTL reduced damages vs multiple LTL moves | Peak season rates pushed FTL costs up 9%
GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Inventory Investment)
A productivity metric showing gross margin dollars earned for each dollar invested in inventory, calculated as gross margin divided by average inventory cost.
Our upholstery GMROI rose to 3.1 after improving turns | Rank vendors by GMROI to guide open-to-buy | GMROI flagged slow-moving dining sets despite strong margins
Gross Margin
Sales revenue minus cost of goods sold; can be expressed as dollars or as a percentage of sales and is a core profitability measure.
The promotion cut gross margin by 250 bps | We raised prices after foam costs eroded gross margin | Track gross margin by category: casegoods vs upholstery
Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
The system of commodity codes used to classify imported goods for duties and statistics; correct coding impacts landed cost and compliance.
Classify wooden bedroom furniture under the correct HTS to determine duty | An HTS shift increased our landed cost on cabinets | Brokers reviewed HTS codes before the new tariff took effect
High Point Market
The largest U.S. home furnishings trade show held in High Point, North Carolina, a key venue for product sourcing, trends, and vendor relations.
We sourced new farmhouse dining at High Point Market | Trend notes from High Point informed our spring assortment | Book vendor appointments early for High Point Market
In-Home Delivery (White Glove)
Premium delivery service to room of choice that includes unboxing, assembly, placement, and packaging removal; often scheduled with time windows.
Offer white glove on sectionals with assembly and debris removal | White glove NPS scores outperformed threshold delivery | We upsold to in-home delivery for the solid wood armoire
In-Stock Rate
The percentage of active SKUs available for immediate fulfillment; a key availability and service-level metric.
Maintain a 95% in-stock rate on top 100 SKUs | Low in-stock rates hurt our BOPIS promise | Vendor fill-rate issues dropped in-stock on recliners
Inventory Turnover
A measure of how many times inventory is sold and replaced over a period, commonly calculated as COGS divided by average inventory.
Upholstery turns improved from 3.2 to 3.8 | Increase turns by tightening buys and expanding special order | Slow turns in casegoods are tying up open-to-buy
Just-in-Time (JIT)
An inventory strategy that schedules deliveries to arrive exactly when needed, reducing carrying costs but requiring highly reliable supply.
JIT works for hardware but not custom sofas with long lead times | We adopted JIT for flat-pack accessories to free space | Supplier variability makes JIT risky during peak season
Knock-Down (KD)
Furniture designed to be shipped disassembled (flat-pack) and assembled at the customer’s home or by delivery teams.
The KD bookshelf ships flat and assembles in 20 minutes | KD packaging reduced freight class and damages | Offer assembly services for KD dining sets
Last-Mile Delivery
The final leg of delivery from a local hub or DC to the customer’s home; a major driver of cost, experience, and damage rates.
Route density improved last-mile efficiency by 15% | We added SMS tracking for last-mile updates | Outsourcing last-mile reduced damages on casegoods
Lead Time
The elapsed time from order placement to receipt or delivery, including production, transit, customs, and local handling.
The custom sofa lead time is 10–12 weeks | Port congestion extended lead times on imports | We quote lead time by vendor on every product page
Less-than-Truckload (LTL)
A freight mode consolidating multiple shipments on one truck; cost-effective for pallets or partial loads but with more handling than FTL.
We ship single dressers via LTL with liftgate service | Reclassing reduced LTL rates on accent chairs | LTL damages prompted us to upgrade packaging
Loss Leader
An item priced at or below cost to attract shoppers or stimulate cross-sales of higher-margin products.
We priced the entry-level mattress as a loss leader to drive traffic | The $299 coffee table is a loss leader that bundles with sofas | Use a loss leader during anniversary sale to boost footfall
MAP (Minimum Advertised Price)
A manufacturer policy specifying the lowest price a retailer may advertise (not necessarily sell) an item for, supporting price integrity and channel fairness.
We can’t advertise below MAP on that recliner | MAP holidays allow deeper promotional pricing | Enforce MAP to protect brand value across marketplaces
Markdown
A reduction in the original selling price to stimulate sales, manage aged inventory, or respond to competition; may be planned or reactive.
Take a 20% markdown on last season’s patio sets | We planned progressive markdowns to clear dead stock | Markdown dollars are offset by vendor co-op funds
Modular Furniture
Furniture composed of interchangeable components that can be configured in various layouts, common in sectionals and storage systems.
The modular sectional can grow from 3 to 6 pieces | We merchandised modular storage to show multiple configurations | Modular sofas improved delivery through narrow stairwells
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
The smallest quantity a supplier will accept on a purchase order for a given SKU or finish, often tied to price breaks and production efficiency.
The vendor’s MOQ is 50 units per finish | We negotiated a lower MOQ on bar stools to test the style | MOQ constraints impact open-to-buy and cash flow
Net Promoter Score (NPS)
A loyalty metric ranging from -100 to 100 based on customers’ likelihood to recommend; used to monitor experience and drive improvements.
White glove customers have an NPS of 72 | NPS dipped after delivery delays; we added proactive updates | Track NPS by store and delivery partner
Net Terms
Payment terms indicating when invoices are due (e.g., Net 30, Net 60) and any early payment discounts, affecting working capital.
We asked for Net 60 to help cash flow on the new line | The vendor offers 2/10 Net 30 early-pay discounts | Align Net terms with production lead times on custom orders
Omnichannel
A unified retail approach integrating online, stores, marketplaces, and service touchpoints with consistent pricing, inventory, and experiences.
Enable returns anywhere for a true omnichannel experience | One view of inventory supports omnichannel fulfillment | Our marketing calendar is now omnichannel and synchronized
Open-to-Buy (OTB)
A purchasing budget that controls how much inventory can be bought for upcoming periods based on plans, sales, stock on hand, and on-order.
We freed OTB by liquidating dead stock nightstands | OTB this month focuses on upholstery bestsellers | Track OTB weekly to fund new intros after High Point Market
