Excellent cut increases brilliance; A dirty pavilion reduces perceived brilliance; Round brilliant cuts are designed to maximize brilliance.
Carat
A unit of mass used for gemstones equal to 0.20 grams; not a size measure, though weight correlates with dimensions.
A 1.00 ct diamond weighs 0.20 grams; TCW (total carat weight) for a pavé band is 0.35 ct; Price per carat often increases nonlinearly with size.
Clarity
A grading of internal (inclusions) and external (blemishes) characteristics in gems; impacts appearance and value.
VS1 clarity is typically eye-clean; Plot inclusions at 10x on the grading report; Lower clarity can still look great if inclusions are off-center.

Stock GIA-graded center stones; Enroll associates in GIA courses; Align store standards with GIA grading practices.
Gross margin
Revenue minus cost of goods sold, expressed as a percentage; indicates profitability of merchandise.
Target 55–60% on fashion jewelry; Analyze margin by vendor and category; Factor financing and return costs into margin decisions.
Hallmark
A legally recognized stamp indicating precious metal purity (and often maker or assay office).
Verify 925 for sterling and 750 for 18K; Recognize UK assay office marks; Use hallmarks to vet estate pieces.
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)
A process to grow diamonds or alter color/clarity using extreme pressure and temperature.
HPHT-grown diamonds require disclosure; HPHT can transform brown diamonds to near-colorless; Use advanced testing to detect HPHT treatments.
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
A major gemological laboratory that grades diamonds and gemstones and issues reports.
Many lab-grown diamonds are graded by IGI; Compare grading consistency across labs; Attach IGI PDFs to product listings.
Inclusions
Internal characteristics within a gemstone; their type, size, and position influence clarity and durability.
