Sign Shops Industry Terminology

ACM (Aluminum Composite Material)

A lightweight, rigid panel made of two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a polyethylene or mineral core; commonly 3mm or 6mm. Durable, flat, routable, and ideal for exterior panels, fascia, and pan-fold signs. FR cores are used where fire codes require.

- 'Spec 3mm ACM for the storefront panel to keep weight down.' - 'We can route-and-fold the ACM to create a pan face.' - 'Use FR-rated ACM for the interior lobby wall per code.'

ADA Signage

Signage that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act: tactile raised characters, Grade 2 Braille, high contrast, non-glare finishes, pictogram rules, and prescribed mounting locations/heights. State variations (e.g., California Title 24) may apply.

- 'These room IDs need tactile copy and Grade 2 Braille to be ADA-compliant.' - 'Confirm mounting height at 48 inches to baseline for ADA signs.' - 'Use a matte finish to meet the ADA non-glare requirement.'

Acrylic (PMMA)

A clear or colored plastic (often called Plexiglas) used for sign faces, dimensional letters, and displays. Available cast or extruded; cast acrylic routes and polishes better, extruded is more economical. Can be edge-lit, flame-polished, or thermoformed.

- 'We’ll use 3/16-inch cast acrylic for the push-through letters.' - 'Edge-polish the acrylic for a premium look.' - 'Switch to polycarbonate if impact resistance is critical.'

Adhesive Vinyl: Cast vs Calendered

Cast vinyl is thinner, more conformable, and dimensionally stable (best for vehicle wraps and complex curves). Calendered vinyl is thicker, less conformable, and more prone to shrink (suited to flat signs and short-to-mid-term graphics). Adhesive types include permanent, removable, low-tack, and air-egress.

- 'Use cast film on those deep channels to prevent lifting.' - 'Calendered vinyl is fine for this flat aluminum panel.' - 'We’ll specify air-release adhesive to minimize bubbles.'

Artwork Proof

A to-scale visual layout sent to clients for review/approval before production. Includes dimensions, materials, colors, callouts, and notes. Approval locks scope; changes afterward typically require a change order.

- 'Please sign the proof so we can release the job to production.' - 'The proof shows PMS 186 for the logo and 1-inch standoffs.' - 'We added a scale bar and dimensions to the proof for clarity.'

Backlit Film

Translucent print media for lightboxes and illuminated displays. Often printed with high ink density or 'double strike' for rich color when lit. Used with diffusion layers to prevent hotspots; compatible with latex, UV, and solvent/eco-solvent inks.

- 'Double-strike the backlit film to keep reds saturated at night.' - 'Let’s add a diffuser behind the film to even out the LEDs.' - 'Swap the duratrans with UV backlit film for durability.'

Bill of Materials (BOM)

A detailed list of all materials/components, quantities, and specs required to build a sign. Drives purchasing, costing, scheduling, and quality control; often paired with a work order/job traveler.

- 'The BOM shows eight LED modules per letter and 3mm ACM.' - 'Purchasing is waiting on the BOM to order the laminate.' - 'Update the BOM to reflect the switch to 6500K LEDs.'

Bleed

Extra printed image area beyond the final trim line to avoid white edges after cutting. Typical bleeds are 0.125 inch for small prints; larger signage/wraps may require more.

- 'Add 0.25-inch bleed all around for the contour cut.' - 'We need panel-to-panel bleed for the tiled mural.' - 'Your PDF exported without bleed; please resend.'
