Upholstery and Carpet Cleaning Industry Terminology
Absorbent Compound Cleaning
A very-low-moisture (VLM) method where a slightly damp, absorbent compound is brushed into carpet to encapsulate and absorb soil, then vacuumed away. Useful for moisture-sensitive fibers and interim maintenance.
Acid Dye Blocker
A post-cleaning protectant (often for nylon) that fills open dye sites to reduce acceptance of acid-based stains like red beverages.
Agitation
Mechanical or manual action (CRB, counter-rotating brush, groomer, hand brush) that works preconditioner into fibers, improving soil suspension.
Air Mover
A high-velocity fan used to accelerate drying of carpets and upholstery after cleaning or water intrusion.
Alkalinity
The high-pH side of the pH scale. Alkaline cleaners are effective on oily/greasy soils but should be neutralized to avoid residue and dye instability.
ANSI/IICRC S100 Standard
The industry consensus standard and reference guide for professional cleaning of textile floor coverings.
Biocide
A chemical that kills or inhibits microorganisms. Used where appropriate for odor control or sanitation per label and regulations.
Bonnet Cleaning
A very-low-moisture method using a rotary or oscillating machine with an absorbent pad (bonnet) to transfer surface soil.
Browning (Cellulosic Browning)
Brown or tea-colored discoloration caused by lignin migration in cellulosic fibers/backings (e.g., jute) after overwetting/delayed drying.
Carpet Protector
A fluorochemical treatment applied post-cleaning to reduce soil/stain adhesion and make future spot removal easier.
Colorfastness Test
A pre-cleaning test to determine if dyes will bleed, fade, or transfer when exposed to cleaning solutions and moisture.
CRI Seal of Approval (SOA)
Carpet and Rug Institute program certifying cleaning solutions and equipment for performance and carpet warranty compliance.
Cushion (Carpet Pad)
The underlay beneath carpet that affects comfort and longevity; can harbor urine, spills, and odors.
Defoamer
A product added to hoses or waste tank to suppress foam that can impair vacuum airflow and extraction.
Delamination
Separation of the carpet’s primary and secondary backings, often due to overwetting, age, or adhesive failure.
Dry Soil Removal
Thorough pre-vacuuming and pile lifting to remove dry particulates before wet cleaning; removes the majority of soil load.
Dwell Time
The time a chemical needs on the fiber/soil to work effectively; critical for both cleaning and sanitizing.
Dye Bleed
Unintended migration of dyes when wet or exposed to chemicals; common risk in rugs and some upholstery.
Encapsulation Cleaning (Encap)
A VLM method using polymers that surround and crystallize soils; soils are removed in subsequent vacuuming.
Emulsification
The process by which surfactants disperse and suspend oily soils into water so they can be rinsed away.
Enzyme Cleaner
Biological cleaners containing enzymes that break down organic soils like food, sweat, blood, and urine residues.
EPA Safer Choice
A U.S. EPA program that recognizes products meeting stringent criteria for safer chemistry and performance.
Estimate vs. Quote
An estimate is a non-binding price approximation; a quote is a binding offer for a defined scope and time.
Fiber Identification
Determining fiber type (wool, nylon, olefin, polyester, etc.) via testing to choose safe chemistry and methods.
Filtration Soil
Dark lines at carpet edges and beneath doors caused by air movement depositing fine oily particles; challenging to remove.
Grooming (Pile Setting)
Using a carpet rake/brush to align fibers after cleaning or protector application, improving appearance and dry times.
HEPA Filtration
Filtration that captures 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size; improves indoor air quality during cleaning.
Hot Water Extraction (HWE)
Deep cleaning method that injects heated solution under pressure and immediately extracts it with strong vacuum; often called 'steam cleaning.'
IICRC Certification
Professional certifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification for technicians and firms.
In-Plant Rug Cleaning
Off-site cleaning in a controlled facility, often involving dusting, immersion, controlled drying, and detailed fringe work.
Moisture Meter
A device (pin or pinless) used to measure moisture content in carpet, cushion, subfloor, or upholstery.
Nap (Pile) Direction
The direction in which carpet fibers lay; affects appearance, grooming, and wand stroke technique.
Neutral pH Rinse
An acidic/neutral rinse used after alkaline preconditioning to rebalance pH, reduce residue, and stabilize dyes.
Odor Neutralizer
Chemistry that counteracts malodors at a molecular level rather than masking with fragrance.
Oxidizer
Chemicals (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate) that break down stains/odors by oxidation; used judiciously to avoid color loss.
Pet Urine Decontamination
A process addressing urine stains and odors by dissolving urine salts, flushing contamination, and neutralizing odor sources.
pH Scale
A 0–14 scale indicating acidity/alkalinity of solutions; critical for dye stability and cleaning efficacy.
Pile Lifting
Using a pile lifter or CRB to raise crushed fibers, pull out embedded soils, and prep for extraction.
Preconditioning (Pre-Spray)
Application of a cleaning solution to soiled areas prior to agitation and extraction; targets specific soils.
Pressure (PSI)
The solution pressure at the wand/jets during extraction; affects penetration and moisture load.
Protector Application
The process of applying stain/soil protector at correct coverage, then grooming for even distribution.
Quick-Dry Techniques
Practices that accelerate drying, including high-velocity air movement, warm ambient air, lower solution flow, and VLM methods.
Red Dye Removal
Specialized treatment using reducing or oxidizing agents with controlled heat to remove acid red beverage dyes.
Residue
Remaining detergents or soils left in the carpet that attract dirt and cause rapid resoiling.
Surfactant
Surface-active agents that lower water’s surface tension, improving wetting, emulsification, and soil suspension.
Truckmount
A van-mounted extraction unit providing high heat, pressure, and vacuum for efficient HWE.
UV Light Inspection
Using ultraviolet light to locate urine contamination, biological residues, and some cleaning residues.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
Organic chemicals that off-gas into indoor air; low-VOC chemistry helps protect indoor air quality.
Wicking
Reappearance of spots/stains as moisture and dissolved soils migrate to the surface during drying.
Work Order
An internal job document outlining scope, pricing, timing, and special instructions for technicians.
