Bait and Tackle Stores Industry Terminology

Action (Rod Action)

Describes where and how much a fishing rod bends under load: fast (top third), moderate (middle), slow (deeper). Influences casting distance, hookset, and lure presentation.

Fast action rods help with quick hooksets on jigs. Moderate action shines for crankbait treble hooks. Label action clearly on rod racks to aid buyers.

Aerator (Bait Aerator)

A device that pumps oxygen into live bait water to keep minnows, shiners, and leeches alive. Includes pumps, stones, hoses, and power sources.

Add a 12V aerator to the minnow tank for summer. Upsell a portable aerator with every minnow bucket. Test aerator stones weekly to prevent bait die-offs.

AOV (Average Order Value)

Retail metric calculating the average spend per transaction. AOV = total revenue divided by number of orders; used to gauge upselling effectiveness.

Our AOV rose after bundling line with reels. Add-on hooks and sinkers can lift AOV by 10 percent. Track AOV by channel to evaluate promotions.

Assortment Planning

Process of selecting the right mix of products, brands, sizes, and price points for a store or season to maximize sales and margins.

Use sales history to guide spring bass assortment planning. Assortment planning balances SKUs across price points and techniques. Local species drive live bait assortment planning.

Backstock

Inventory stored off the sales floor awaiting replenishment. Proper backstock management reduces out-of-stocks and improves planogram compliance.

Keep backup nightcrawlers in backstock coolers. Audit peg hooks and backstock weekly to reduce outs. Move slow-moving backstock to an endcap promotion.

Baitcasting Reel

A reel with a revolving spool mounted on top of the rod, offering precision casting and power. Requires thumb control; popular for bass techniques.

Recommend a 7.1:1 baitcasting reel for chatterbaits. Teach thumb control to new baitcasting reel users. Stock left-hand retrieve baitcasting reels for bass anglers.

Barbless Hook

A hook with the barb removed or not manufactured, easing hook removal and reducing fish injury. Sometimes required by regulations.

Promote barbless hooks for catch-and-release trout. Some local waters mandate barbless hook use. Offer free barbless hook pinching at the counter.

Braided Line

High-strength, low-stretch fishing line made from woven fibers. Offers sensitivity and thin diameter; often used with leaders for stealth.

Suggest braided line for heavy cover frogging. Pair braid with a fluorocarbon leader for clarity. Stock hi-vis braid for float-and-jig setups.

Carolina Rig

A bottom-contact rig with sliding sinker, bead, swivel, leader, and hook that keeps soft plastic baits off the bottom, effective for covering water.

Demonstrate a Carolina rig for deep summer bass. Bundle beads, swivels, and egg sinkers for Carolina rig kits. The Carolina rig sells well near creature baits.

Circle Hook

A hook whose point curves toward the shank so it tends to set in the corner of a fish’s mouth, improving survival on release.

Recommend circle hooks for live bait walleye rigs. Circle hook design reduces deep hooking in catfish. Stock inline circle hooks for regulations compliance.

Conversion Rate

Percentage of visitors who make a purchase. In-store or online, it reflects merchandising, staffing, and user experience effectiveness.

Improve conversion rate with staffed reel spooling. Our website conversion rate jumped after adding inventory visibility. Measure jig wall conversion rate during promotions.

Crankbait

A hard-plastic lure with a bill or lip that dives and wobbles when retrieved, imitating baitfish or crawfish at specific depths.

Put shallow crankbaits on the spring endcap. Moderate action rods match crankbait treble hooks. Offer silent and rattling crankbait options.

Cross-Merchandising

Placing complementary items together to increase basket size and convenience, encouraging add-on purchases.

Cross-merchandise fluorocarbon leaders beside braid. Place aerators near minnow buckets for impulse adds. Pair ice jigs with cleats and hand warmers.

Demand Forecasting

Predicting future sales using history, seasonality, promotions, and external factors to inform purchasing and staffing.

Forecast leech demand around Memorial Day. Use weather and moon phase to refine lure demand forecasting. Forecasting guides preorders before ICAST.

Drag (Reel)

Adjustable resistance system on a reel that lets line slip under tension to prevent breakoffs and keep steady pressure on fish.

Set reel drag to one-third of line test. Teach customers to adjust drag during a fight. Smooth drag matters for light line trout setups.

Drop Shot Rig

A finesse setup where the weight hangs below the hook, presenting soft plastics above bottom with minimal movement.

Feature drop shot rigs for summer smallmouth. Sell drop shot weights and nose hooks as a bundle. Offer a clinic on finesse drop shot techniques.

EOQ (Economic Order Quantity)

Inventory formula that determines the optimal order size to minimize combined ordering and carrying costs.

Calculate EOQ for nightcrawlers to reduce spoilage. Adjust EOQ when supplier lead times shrink. Use EOQ to balance ordering costs and holding costs.

FIFO (First-In, First-Out)

Inventory rotation principle where the oldest stock is sold first, critical for perishables and dated goods.

Use FIFO on live bait and soft plastics. Date-stamp gulp jars to enforce FIFO. FIFO minimizes expired scent bait shrink.

Fish Finder (CHIRP Sonar)

Electronic sonar device that shows underwater structure, depth, and fish. CHIRP sends varied frequencies for clearer target separation.

Explain CHIRP benefits on entry-level fish finders. Upsell a battery kit with fish finder purchases. Stock transducer mounts near fish finder displays.

Fluorocarbon Line

Low-visibility line with refractive index close to water; abrasion-resistant and sinks, often used as leader or mainline.

Promote fluorocarbon leaders in clear lakes. Fluorocarbon line sinks, ideal for crankbaits. Offer bulk spooling of fluorocarbon at the counter.

Gear Ratio

Reel measurement indicating spool turns per handle turn (e.g., 7.1:1). Affects retrieve speed and technique suitability.

Recommend higher gear ratio for topwater walking. A 6.3:1 gear ratio is versatile for beginners. Post gear ratio charts near reels.

GMROI (Gross Margin Return on Investment)

Metric showing gross margin dollars earned per dollar invested in inventory. GMROI = gross margin / average inventory cost.

Soft plastics GMROI improved after SKU rationalization. Live bait has high turns and strong GMROI. Compare GMROI by vendor each quarter.

Gross Margin

Sales minus cost of goods sold, expressed in dollars or percentage, reflecting product profitability before operating expenses.

Aim for 45 percent gross margin on terminal tackle. Adjust pricing to protect margin after freight increases. Track margin mix by category weekly.

Hook Size Numbering

System indicating hook size; sizes go from large numbers (small hooks) down to 1, then 1/0, 2/0 upward for larger hooks.

Explain that smaller numbers mean larger hooks below 1. Use 1/0 to 5/0 hooks for bass plastics. Label hook size numbering on the peg tags.

IM Rating (Graphite Modulus)

A rod blank stiffness metric (e.g., IM6, IM8) indicating graphite modulus; higher numbers generally mean lighter, stiffer blanks.

An IM8 rod feels lighter and more sensitive. Compare IM ratings across rod price tiers. Clarify that IM rating isn’t a universal standard.

Inches Per Turn (IPT)

How many inches of line a reel retrieves per handle turn. Depends on spool diameter and gear ratio.

Highlight IPT on spinning reel shelf labels. Higher IPT retrieves slack quickly for jerkbaits. Match IPT to technique and angler preference.

Inline Spinner

A lure with a spinning blade rotating around a wire shaft, creating flash and vibration, effective for trout, pike, and panfish.

Stock inline spinners for trout opener. Inline spinner blades attract walleye in current. Offer single-hook inline spinner options for regs.

Inventory Turnover

How many times inventory sells through in a period. Turnover = cost of goods sold / average inventory cost.

Increase turnover by trimming duplicate SKUs. Live bait turnover should be measured daily. Clearance slow movers to improve turnover.

Jig Head

Weighted hook used to present soft plastics; shapes and weights vary for different techniques and conditions.

Pair jig heads with swimbaits on the peg. Offer mushroom jig heads for Ned rigs. Keep jig head sizes organized by weight.

Jerkbait

A hardbait worked with twitches and pauses to imitate injured baitfish; suspending versions are popular for bass and walleye.

Promote suspending jerkbaits in cold water. Jerkbait sales spike with clear water reports. Recommend fluoro leaders with jerkbaits for abrasion.

Leader Material

Short section of line (fluoro, mono, or wire) between mainline and lure to reduce visibility or add abrasion resistance.

Suggest fluorocarbon leader on braid mainline. Use wire leader for pike to prevent bite-offs. Stock leader sleeves and crimps near leader spools.

Livewell

Compartment or portable container designed to keep bait or caught fish alive with water circulation and aeration.

Demonstrate livewell care products to customers. Sell portable livewells for shore anglers. Advise aerator upgrades for small livewells.

MAP (Minimum Advertised Price)

Manufacturer policy setting the lowest price a retailer may advertise. Violations risk penalties or loss of supply.

Enforce MAP on premium reels during sales. Train staff on MAP vs in-store price matching. Monitor vendor MAP updates monthly.

Merchandising Planogram

A schematic that dictates product placement, facings, and adjacencies on fixtures to maximize sales and consistency.

Reset the jig wall to the new planogram. Planogram shows peg counts by SKU and facing. Audit planogram compliance before tournament season.

Monofilament Line

Nylon single-strand line with moderate stretch and buoyancy; forgiving and economical for many species and techniques.

Recommend mono for beginners due to stretch. Monofilament is buoyant, great for topwater. Offer bulk mono spooling as a service.

Ned Rig

A finesse setup using a small buoyant stick bait on a light mushroom jig head, enticing subtle bites from finicky fish.

Feature Ned rig kits for pressured lakes. Stock mushroom heads and buoyant stick baits for Ned rigs. Offer a Ned rig how-to clinic.

POS (Point of Sale)

The system and location where transactions occur; records sales, manages inventory, and supports promotions and loyalty.

Use POS data to track lure sell-through. Enable POS prompts for add-on swivels. Integrate POS with inventory for live counts.

Power (Rod Power)

Describes a rod’s resistance to bending under load (ultralight to heavy). Determines suitable lure weights and line strengths.

Recommend medium-heavy power for frogs. Ultralight power suits panfish. Match rod power to lure weight ranges on tags.

Reel Spool Capacity

The amount of line a reel spool can hold, usually listed in yards per pound-test for mono and braid equivalents.

Check spool capacity before loading 50 lb braid. List yardage by line test on reel boxes. Offer line-fill calculators for spool capacity.

SKU

Stock Keeping Unit; a unique identifier for each distinct product variant used for inventory, pricing, and analytics.

Consolidate duplicate SKUs in soft plastics. Track SKU-level margins weekly. Create new SKUs for custom jig colors.

Slip Bobber

A fishing float that slides on the line and is set to depth using a stop knot or bead, enabling long casts and precise depth control.

Sell slip bobber stops with every float. Slip bobber rigs excel for suspended crappie. Display threaded stops near floats for convenience.

Soft Plastics

Flexible lures made from soft materials (worms, craws, swimbaits) rigged on hooks or jig heads for lifelike action.

Expand soft plastics color range for clear water. Cross-merchandise soft plastics with terminal tackle. Run a mix-and-match soft plastics promo.

Spinnerbait

A wire-frame lure with one or more spinning blades and a skirting; produces flash and vibration to trigger strikes.

Stock double-willow spinnerbaits for clear water. Suggest slow-rolling spinnerbaits in cold fronts. Replace skirt bins near spinnerbait pegs.

Split Shot

Small pinch-on weights used to adjust sink rate and presentation depth on rigs and floats.

Add split shot to live bait rigs. Offer lead-free split shot where regulations require. Place split shot near hooks for quick grabs.

Spool Memory

The tendency of line, especially monofilament, to retain coils from the spool, causing loops and casting issues.

Recommend line conditioner to reduce spool memory. Mono with high memory coils off spinning reels. Respools fix severe spool memory issues.

Terminal Tackle

Small components used to rig lures and baits: hooks, swivels, snaps, sinkers, beads, and leaders.

Build terminal tackle bundles for beginners. Terminal tackle GMROI is typically strong. Keep terminal tackle near planogram eye level.

Test (Pound Test)

Rating indicating line strength before breaking, measured in pounds. Guides selection for species, technique, and drag setting.

Match line test to rod rating. Use 8 lb test for walleye jigging. Set drag to one-third of line test.

Texas Rig

A weedless soft plastic rig with a bullet weight and offset hook; the hook point is embedded in the bait to prevent snagging.

Demonstrate a pegged Texas rig for heavy cover. Sell worm hooks and bullet weights for Texas rigs. Texas rig is weedless, ideal for grass.

Treble Hook

A three-pointed hook commonly used on hardbaits; improves hookups but can increase fish handling time and injury risk.

Replace treble hooks on crankbaits with round bends. Offer barbless treble options for trout waters. Carry split ring pliers for treble swaps.

Wacky Rig

A finesse rig where a soft stick bait is hooked through the middle, producing a fluttering fall that entices bass.
